Marassa Twins Voodoo Dolls

The Marassa are the divine twins who speak to us of twin souls who find each other lifetime after lifetime to interact as their karma dictates. In West Africa a person who has lost a twin will wear a small effigy of that child for the rest of their life and will treat it as the eternal presence of the absent soul.
In Santeria there are known as the Ibeji, the twin sons of the king Xango who are spurred onto fight each other by their father and as a consequence die, provoking the death of Xango himself who is then elevated to an Orisha. So they are often considered to be vying for power or adversaries in the cosmic play of things.
It also exemplifies the belief that there must be opposition, duality in this world. We must have the courage to see ourselves in our separateness and accept duality. We must also face our "otherness" with compassion and love rather than criticism. Relationships that are not healed in this lifetime must be repeated again and again until the lesson is learnt.
The Marassa are lightly tied to each other, showing that they can be separated by the events of a lifetime but will most likely will be re-united if not now, then in the next life. In the picture, you see that the boy has his arm into the girl's sash and she has her arm into the sash at his back. They are not bound to show that they will be separated, yet they have a connection that will transcend death and they will undoubtedly find each other again.
As children, they are offered separate plates of candies and fruits. Their number is 6.
A good offering for the Marassa (or the Ibeji) is 2 small white plates of 6 different fruits on each plate. Also they may be offered six candies of different kinds.
Once during a Ritual performance, my daughter and her little friend performed the role of the Marassa by doing cartwheels starting from opposite sides of the stage and crossing each other, cartwheeling.. they both wore white dresses with red sashes - Xango's colors.
They help us understand the duality of this material life and our existence within this realm.
They also exemplify the magic we can create within our own life when we make use of our own polarity and walk in true balance. True magiciens walk the beam between the two worlds, perceiving the duality in all things as well as their greater source. They accept and pray for the release of all souls from the bondage and suffering of the cycles of birth, disease, old age and death.
They bring good luck, happiness and many blessings (as would the birth of twins in a family) but they are also used to come to terms with your soul-mate if you are having difficulties understanding that relationship.
