    Ancestors Doll

These dolls result from so many different inspirations: the burial practices of New Orleans come to mind right away of course after years of doing my lovely Voodoo and Cemetery Tours, but also the works of other artists who have inspired me with their beautiful works and their use of both flat surfaces such as canvas and three dimensional objects, natural elements and clay. In particular Mishlen Linden has me in constant awe of her work.  But they were also  inspired by a Madagascar ritual when Ancestors are invited to a feast at the village. Each year, the villages remove their ancestors from their burial caves and bring them to a feast with drumming and dancing.  Rev. Louis Martinie and I were privilege to hear about this and sample the music at one of the Festival International de la Musique in Lafayette. Beautiful and haunting!
The first work of this kind which I made can be seen on the Voodoo Arts page, the two ancestors seem to be "running" - probably to that very joyful Ancestral Ritual!! Another was made for Cat Donnow of after she told me of her Ancestor who "turned to stone" in a N.O cemetery and seems to be literally stepping out of the frame and into her daily life. Others were influenced by ancient Egypt or the Etruscans, when I used turquoise beads, broken pottery and mosaics.

These dolls have a clay face and can be made single or double or even as a "family" but iare otherwise made of sticks, cloth, and other materials and is set on a canvas inside a stretcher, to give the imprssion of a shadow box..
As with all of my other products, these dolls are made individually and no two are exactly alike. I have found that these dolls tend to want to be very animated. As if our ancestors wanted to come out of the frame and join us in our daily lives.
These Ancestor's Dolls can be a very powerful focus for your Ancestral Altar and will soon become a great intercessor for you into the astral plane.

Prices vary as more or less elements and time are needed.  Please inquire for price, shipping and availability.
